In January of 2016 the national college football championship took over Phoenix, Arizona. Downtown Phoenix was transformed to a college football “disneyland” with exciting attractions. Crowds gathered with a fever of anticipation to meet players, take selfies with football themed buildings and statues, and to watch the free three-day concert series, Playoff Playlist by AT & T. To mark the first day of Playoff Playlist, platinum selling and Grammy winning country band, The Band Perry, gave a confident and infectious performance. The Band Perry, consisting of the Perry siblings Kimberly, Reid, and Neil, have released two albums and such songs as “If I Die Young,” “Better Dig Two,” “Done,” “Chainsaw,” and most recently “Live Forever.” The Band Perry gave a sassy and bold show. They were ready to bring the party and make you wash away any worries. The show consisted of The Band Perry fan favorites like “Hip To My Heart,” “Better Dig Two,” and “If I Die Young” to name a few as well as covers including Charles Barkely’s “Crazy” and Justin Timberlake’s “Sexyback.” This show also gave fans a glimpse into their up and coming third album that is planned to be released some time in 2016. The new songs, which has not been performed before, had catchy lyrics and feel good vibes. Kimberly brought a sassiness and boldness to their performance that elevated the show from hearing music to feeling the music. It was empowering to watch. My favorite moment was when they sang “Done.” It’s a I don’t care what anyone else thinks and I am doing what is best for me song. The show showcased The Band Perry’s amazing genre versatility with slower jams like “If I Die Young” to rock out jams that make you feel strong like “Done.” The Band Perry is in the sweet spot between country, pop, and rock music incorporating the best qualities of all three. The Band Perry are also great musicians and supported with a lovely band. They sounded smooth and well oiled together, in the best possible way. All three siblings also did a nice job connecting with the audience. They pointed, smiled, danced, laughed and waved to audience members. They also changed spots around the stage allowing all audience members the chance to seem them near them. This made the show feel more natural and not static on this massive manufactured stage. You never really knew what was coming next or what you would see. All you knew is that it was going to be one heck of an amusing time. There was not one single slow moment throughout. It was heart pumping, arm swaying, guitar and violin slashing fun. The lights were colorful, the band was happy, and the music was beautiful, what more could you ask for.
